Ogun State Government once made a move to suspended the Principal of Ajuwon Senior High School which is situated in Ajuwon, Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State. Mrs Olufunke Oladeojobi, who was alleged to have conducted a virginity test on her pupils without the consent of the students parents. The Nigerian Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Segun Odubela, confirmed this through the phone that Principal Oladeojobi had been suspended from activities in the school. Odubela further went on to say that, “A five-man committee comprising officials of the Ministry of Education and the state Teaching Service Commission had been set up to investigate Oladeojobi and her dubious actions. “The Five Man committee was mandated to report back to the government within 14 days. Still on the phone conversation, Mr Odubela also said that all he can say is that we have suspended her, till the conclusion of investigation to see if she really conducted the test.” We’re also informed that the government’s resolution came after Odubela and some senior officials of the ministry quizzed the principal for over two hours. A source told our correspondent that the Principal was summoned to the ministry after they’ve read the News. According to him, they were really embarrassed when they read about the story. According to him, immediately, the relevant parastatals were asked to contact her and to make sure that she appeared at the ministry. The Principal was quizzed for over two hours and she denied carrying out the test. Instead, she said she only threatened the pupils that she’ll carry out the tests. Odubela, in a statement, added that the government was always concerned about the welfare and interest of students and therefore would not tolerate any act that would compromise their fundamental rights or jeopardise their future anywhere or anytime. He went further to said that, “We equally believe in the need to maintain discipline in our schools and to follow due process in the handling of this particular case. According to him, they’re really appeal to the parents of the students involved to be patient and allow the Ministry to handle the case as dictated by the law of the land and service rules.” Mr Oladeojobi, a reverend, was said to have on December 10 invited a nurse to the school to carry out virginity tests on a group of 10 students. The principal, who the pupils described as a strict disciplinarian, did not however or in anyway seek the consent of the parents/guardians of the pupils before conducting the insane test. While during the test, it was alleged that the principal and the nurse whose name could not be ascertained dipped their fingers into the pupils’ various body parts. But the matter got out of hand when one of the pupils started bleeding after she had been tested.’ Parents of the pupils later stormed the school in protest, which later brought the policemen from Ajuwon Division. NUC to ensure quality in universities

The National Universities Commission (NUC ) said that it would step up its programme monitoring mechanism to ensure universities did not exceed their capacities. Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie, said in Abuja that the measure was to ensure that universities cater to students on their programmes to ensure academic excellence. Universities in Nigeria often exceed their admission quotas and thus stretched their facilities to deliver quality education to students. Some of the universities also run unapproved programmes. Okojie spoke when he received a delegation, led by Mr Emmanuel Egbagbe, a member of the Governing Council of Benson Idahosa University, Benin-City. “The NUC is taking this step further to re-introduce the programme. This is after years of allocating carrying capacities to the Nigerian universities, ‘’he said. Okojie said the proposed carrying capacity of each course would be determined by the demand, needs and relevance to national development, based on the availability of requisite academic personnel and physical facilities. He said that the Federal Government policy on 60 to 40 ratio for science and arts courses was still in force. According to Okojie, some universities are in the habit of violating NUC regulations with respect to new courses, postgraduate programmes and carrying capacity, thereby creating problems for students and parents. “I want to assure you that students and parents will no longer be made to bear the brunt of unapproved programmes alone as government will henceforth sanction any vice-chancellor who mounts unapproved programmes,’’ he added. The NUC secretary said the commission through the Nigerian Research and Education Network would address the challenges of inadequate bandwidth and other ICT- related issues in the Nigeria universities system. He gave an assurance that the project would not only provide adequate bandwidth but also increase efficient interconnectivity among universities. “This will also enable the universities to share resources and information among others, ” he said. Earlier, Egbagbe said the visit was to introduce the acting Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ernest Izevbigie. He said that the institution currently had a student population of more than 2,300 with a major breakthrough in its research efforts with the discovery of “Edotide’’, from bitter leaf as treatment for chronic diseases. Egbagbe, however, commended the NUC for its support to the Nigerian universities, especially the privately-owned. Nigeria: Open University not accredited to run law programme

The body regulating legal education in the country, the Council of Legal Education, said the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) had not been accredited to run law degree programme. Speaking in Abuja at a briefing to commence the 50 years anniversary of the Nigerian Law School, the Chairman of the Council, Mr Onueze Okocha, said anyone who studied law at NOUN and hoping to secure admission to the Nigerian Law School was merely wasting his time and resources. He explained that NOUN did not have the necessary pre requisites such as moot court, lecturers among others to run a degree in law. He advised those already studying law at NOUN to transfer to accredited universities. He said: “It is a foolhardy for someone to establish a university, put in his money and then choose to run an illegal faculty of law.” Okocha said the Council of Legal Education operated under law and therefore would continue to implement the law. He also dismissed claims that the council might eventually accredit the law programme being run by non-accredited universities. He said: “I don’t want them to waste their monies and time. They should seek transfer to accredited universities.” Also speaking, the Director General of the Nigerian Law School, Dr. Tahir Mamman, said anyone who only wanted to have an acquitance with the law, could go to a non-accredited university to study law. He said: “But if they want to become legal practitioners, they have to go to accredited universities.” Mamman said the list of universities accredited to run law programme had been published and any one interested should endeavour to look up for it before putting in for law in any of the universities. Speaking on the proposed amendment of the law establishing the Council of Legal Education, Okocha stated that the amendment would allow the law school to be best administered. He said: “It must be noted that the proposals, for restructuring and re-organisation of the Council of Legal Education and the Nigerian Law School, are geared towards improving the content and quality of the Legal Education in Nigeria, and ensure that the legal practitioners produced by the Nigerian Law School are duly equipped with requisite character and learning, so that they may be better enabled to discharge their duties and responsibilities in that regard, not just in Nigeria, but throughout the world.”

GTUC signs strategic agreements with three overseas universities

International award-winner, Ghana Technology University College (GTUC), has chalked yet another milestone signing strategic and mutually beneficial agreements with three overseas private universities this month. This comes just weeks after GTUC picked up the keenly contested and prestigious Platinum Award for “Quality Education in Africa” at this year’s Business Initiative Direction (BID) Quality Award in Geneva, Switzerland. The institutions, which signed the agreements with GTUC, were the Stanfordshire University in the United Kingdom, Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU) in Georgia, USA, and Central State University (CSU) in Ohio, USA. Two of the agreements are for exchange programs and collaboration in a wide range of areas of academic development that would go a long way to benefit the students, faculty and administrative staff of GTUC. The third one is specifically to enable students of GTUC to make a smooth transition with their credits to a university abroad and continue their studies. President of GTUC, Dr Osei Kofi Darkwa, and Dr Zvi Szafran from SPSU signed the agreement to enable the two institutions to run joint academic programs and facilitate smooth transition of students from GTUC to SPSU to continue their education without repeating courses they have already covered and GTUC. The agreement covered programmes at both the bachelors and masters levels, and students are allowed to transfer their credits from GTUC to SPSU to ensure a drastic minimisation of credit loss to students. The agreement also allows students doing their thesis to be supervised by faculty from both universities, but the agreement is subject to a periodic review. The second one was a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between GTUC and Central State University (CSU) in Ohio, USA to run an international academic exchange programme between students, faculty and administrators of both universities. The areas of exchange would focus mainly on students, faculty members, researchers, establishment of joint academic programs, organisation of joint research programs, writing of joint proposals, and other academic and development activities. The exchange programmes are expected to facilitate research, develop international relations and boost intellectual growth between the two institutions of higher learning. President of CSU, Cynthia Jackson-Hammond, and Dr Darkwa appended their signatures to the agreement on March 7, 2013. The third agreement was also a MoU between GTUC and UK-based Starfordshire University to collaborate and explore academic co-operation between the two institutions. The areas of collaboration would be mainly around progression opportunities for students, development of mutually beneficial programs, including computing, engineering, business, law and education; research, exchange of publications and reports. Other areas include exchange of faculty for the purpose of staff development, sharing of mutual experience in teaching, planning and handling of academic programs, seminars, conferences, and industrial practice. The two institutions would also explore possible joint programmes and centres of excellence, and also discuss other possible areas of mutual interest. Prof Michael Gunn, Vice Chancellor of Stanfordshire University and Dr Darkwa signed on behalf of their respective institutions. The school has previously signed similar agreement with other universities around the world, and according to Dr Dawkwa, it would soon sign many more of such agreements to facilitate its drive toward offering varied doctorate and other degree programmmes in various disciplines.

The university says it is not aware of any new information which may shed light on the death of the first-year student last year(SABC) The Potchefstroom campus of North West University has again come under criticism for allegedly covering up the truth behind the drowning of former student Thabang Makhoang in the campus swimming pool last year. The University has also been criticised for maintaining alleged discriminatory human resource practices against some of its employees. Former NWU Executive advisor on Transformation, Dr Ingrid Tufvesson, says she was dismissed for trying to uncover how Makhoang died. “The racism there is intrinsic to the way it was formulated pre-1994 remains intact. It is supposed to be circularized and it is supposed to be inclusive. North West University has understood unacceptable behaviour of people to just be a matter of freedom of expression. For example, at the time of Thabang Makhoang's death what you saw on the Potchefstroom campus was a brandishing of the swartztiker, including the three legged AWB Swartztik,” says Tufvesson. Meanwhile, the university says it is not aware of any new information which may shed light on the death of the first-year student last year. Spokesperson Louis Jacobs says the dismissal of six employees may be followed by litigation which renders the matter sub judice. “All the allegations are unequivocally denied. Regarding the matter in question of the 6 dismissed employees, further labour related litigation may however follow which then automatically renders this whole matter sub judice. And as was also indicated the North West University is not aware of any new information which might shed any other light on the tragic incident last year,” he says.

GHANA: SAME SEX RELATIONSHIP IN HIGH SCHOOLS

Homosexuality was recently a hotly debated topic in Ghana following the appointment of gay rights defender Nana Oye Lithur as minister of gender, children and social protection. The subject recurrently comes up and then fritters off. It has come up once again. This time around, the Herald Newspaper reports that lesbianism is apparently gaining strong among students of the Wesley Girls senior high school in the Ashanti regional capital Kumasi. The Paper says 34 girls have been dismissed from the school as a result of the practice. Lesbianism is alleged to be very popular in some all-girls senior high schools in the country. Some boys’ schools have also gained notorietyfor gay practice. In most case, it is the seniors who allegedly introduce and force their juniorsinto the practice. In an interview with some students at the Accra Girls and Osu Presbyterian Senior High Schools stated that the practice appears to be gaining popularity among students.

Police Arrest Over 100 “Vandals” Of University Of Ghana.

More than 100 students of the CommonwealthHall of the University of Ghana have been arrested by the police for flouting the public order Act. The arrested “Vandals” are being held by the Airport Police command in Accra. The students defied a Police order on Saturday April 13, 2013 and went on a float as part of their forthcoming hall week celebration. Over 50 riot Police officers armed with guns, water cannons and truncheons were deployedto the University campus at Legon in Accra to stop the float. The Public Affairs Director of the Accra Police Command, DSP Freeman Tettey told XYZ News the leadership of the students gave the Police just three days notice, instead of five days prior notice, as stipulated by the public Order Act before organising such public events. He said the Police told the students they could not provide officers to monitor the float because of other pressing national assignments which require their attention. DSP Tettey explained that the State is expecting some important dignitaries in the country in the coming days and thus the needfor the Police to focus attention on such issuesrather than on a students’ float. The students attempted outsmarting the Police by using an evasive route but were intercepted at the Tetteh Quarshie roundabout and over 100 of them were rounded up. However the Junior Common Room President of the Commonwealth Hall, Nana Banyin Darkwa told XYZ News they gave the Police adequate notice of the float. He said the float was mainly to sensitize the public about the dangers of hepatitis B. Nana Banyin Darkwa said the Police mistook the float for a demonstration. He attributed the heavy-handedness of the law officers to what he deemed as a total misconception about the the intentions of the students. Source: XYZ News

South Africa and Australia to share world’s largest telescope

South Africa and Australia are to share the US$2billion Square Kilometre Array radio telescope, which will become the most powerful telescope of its kind when it is fully operational in 2024. The gigantic Square Kilometre Array radio telescope will be 50 times more sensitive than the world’s current radio telescopes. South Africa will host most of the Square Kilometre Array dishes. All of the mid-frequency arrays will be in Africa, while the low-frequency arrays will be built in Australia. South Africa’s telescope site will be in the Karoosemi-desert and be connected to a network of dishes across sub-Saharan Africa. The network is made up of countries like Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Namibia and Zambia. The Australian site will be at Mileura station in western Australia, with antennae distributed across the country and New Zealand. Dr Michiel van Haarlem, interim director generalof the SKA Organisation, said, “The SKA will transform our view of the universe; with it we will see back to the moments after the Big Bangand discover previously unexplored parts of the cosmos.” The Square Kilometre Array radio telescope will enable scientists to investigate many mysteriesof the universe, including how the first Black Holes and stars were born, why it is expanding and whether there is life beyond Earth. Scientists will also be able to study dark energy, magnetic fields and extraterrestrial signals. Professor Andrew Kindness, dean of University of KwaZulu-Natal’s school of chemistry and physics said, “The establishment of the SKA willundoubtedly open a new chapter of learning andspace investigation, not only in South Africa, butin other emerging African countries. If there was ever a reason for students to excel at school, the awarding of this mega telescope and the enormous international spin-off in research endeavours, should be a compelling reason to achieve.” Professor of Physics and Senior Research Associate at University of KwaZulu-Natal, Manfred Hellberg, said: “Historically we are a scientifically enriched nation, great enquiring minds, cutting edge empirical science. We are up there with the best and we have a proactive government. So yes, it’s a very exciting prospect, not only for me, but the groupof leading South African scientists.” Share This Piece With Your Friends On Facebook And Twitter! WONDERFUL: 14 years old girl enrols in University of Zimbabwe

Maud Chifamba, who is only 14 years old, will be studying to be an accountant at the University of Zimbabwe in August. “I have always wanted to be one of those professionals and this is a chance I will grasp with both hands and cherish,” she said. “It’s not everyone who is fortunate enough to have this opportunity.” Maud credits her success to God, who has helped the young girl thrive in spite of the toughchallenges that she has faced. Maud grew up in the Hunters resettlement community near the Midlands mining town of Kwekwe. Her father died in 2002, when she was only four and her mother died in December last year. “I grew up in difficult circumstances and I wouldsometimes study on my own without going to school,” she said. Maud started her studies in a resettlement primary school in 2003. She impressed her teachers with her abilities and so they moved her up from Grade 3 to Grade 6. She took her Grade 7 examinations in 2007 when she was only nine, scoring top marks for all her subjects. She then skipped the first two years of high school education, studying on her own for her O levels. University of Zimbabwe vice-chancellor Professor Levi Nyangura said: “There was no financial support for her to undertake her secondary education. Maud read on her own andstill managed to pass her O levels in two years.” Maud’s brother, Gilbert Chifamba said that his sister had succeeded because of her strong discipline. “We thought she would just lose her mind on the way but she stood the taste of time, we hope God will continue to lead her,” said Gilbert. Maud was able to continue her A-level studies at Sandringham High School in Mhondoro when platinum mining company Zimplats decided to sponsor her studies in 2010. Maud scored 12 points in her A-level exams, allowing her to enter the University of Zimbabwe. University spokesman Dennis Rwafa said Maud was a “remarkable” young girl. “Her perseverance and her achievements are amazing. Now she will study towards an honours degree in accountancy. “We felt we needed to protect her and so we brought in the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority,” said Rwafa. The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority has agreed topay Maud’s fees for her four year accountancy course at the University of Zimbabwe. Share This Piece With Your Friends On Facebook And Twitter! They were also said to have burnt the vehicle that killed their colleagues. But a statement by the LAUTECH registrar, Mr J. A. Agboola, on Tuesday denied that three students died in the said accident, which occurred on Monday. NIGERIA: FG To Sack All Varsity VCs Running Unapproved Programmes!

The federal government has issued marching orders to relevant bodies to remove Vice-Chancellors of universities who run unapproved programmes or courses in their institutions. The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie, made this disclosure in Abuja yesterday at the inauguration of the Governing Councils of 21 universities. Okojie added that unapproved programmeshave create more crises than good in schools. “The president and minister have given us the marching orders. Any VC who runs unapproved programmes would go. If we find it hard to remove him, wewould get thegoverning council dissolved, and remove him,” he added. Okojie lamented that some state universities do not have governing councils wondering how such schools would be administered. “There must be good relationship between the managements and councils to run smoothly. Make friends to ensure that thereis progress in the system, not to share the contracts in the system,” he warned. The Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqqayatu Rufa’i, in her address assured members of councils of no interference in the running of the schools, she however noted that the president who is Visitor to the universities can dissolve them before the expiration of their four year term if found wanting. She listed many issues in universities whichviolate laid down laws and Acts and urged the councils to ensure that they are stopped. Some of the issues she said include the appointment of up to three Deputy VCs,non-adherence to the principles of federal character, creation of bogus portfolios and directorates to accommodate aides and cronies and non-prudence in expending available resources. “These appointments are not for self aggrandisement. Honorary degrees andfellows should not be turned to chieftaincy affairs,” Rufai said. She added that the NUC had been directed to monitor the schools and ensure that theyare doing the right things. The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education, Senator Uche Chuwkumerije disclosed that the two common problems which the National Assembly oversight functions have revealed are under- funding in the tertiary institutions and non prudent management of available resources. He also called for caution and ‘thorough thinking’ in the bid to scrap the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) conducted by JAMB. Some of the universities whose councils were inaugurated included the University ofIbadan, University of Abuja and University of Calabar. Share This Piece With Your Friends On Facebook And Twitter! UNIJOS Students Protest School Fees Increment

Academic activities were disrupted at the University of Jos in Plateau State on Thursday as the students protested against the increase in their school fees. The protest also resulted in the distruption of vehicular movements on the busy Jos-Bauchi roads. Our correspondent learnt that a statement posted on the university’s website showed that tuition rose from N12, 000 to N27, 500, while accommodation fee increased from N4, 500 to N12, 500. As early as 8am, placard-carrying students took over the main gate of the Bauchi Road campus of the university, condemning the increase and demanding a reversal. Some of the placards read,‘Daylight rape’,‘our parents are government workers and have not been paid’,‘many parents cannot afford the increase’, among others. Acting President of the Student Union Government, of the institution, Miss Nanlop Maya, who led the protest, said the increase amounted to “commercialisation of education and a demonstration of‘the insensitivity of the school management to their plight.” She said efforts to meet with management to discuss the matter were rebuffed. Maya said “I led a delegation of the students union body to negotiate with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) over the increment but we were denied audience. To my surprise, he said a mere student cannot interact with him.” Registrar of the university, Mr. Jilli Dandam, who addressed the students, promised to take their grievances to the management

Students protest mass food poisoning in Egypt

Hundreds of Egyptian students angered by a mass outbreak of food poisoning, have been protesting for a second day after nearly 500 students from Cair's Al-Azhar university were admitted to hospital with food poisoning.  Khaled el-Khateib, a senior Egyptian health ministry official, said on Tuesday that all cases of poisoning occurred after a meal was served at the dormitories in the capital Nasr City district after a meal was served on Monday.  Mohamed, a student at Al-Azhar said that this was not the first instance of food poisoning at the university. "This is not the first time our food has been poisoned. A similar incident happened before. First, we demand clean food, and second, we demand the dismissal of the director of University City, since he is responsible for all the daily management." The university issued a statement warning students not to "exploit" the mass food poisoning, saying that such incidents have occurred at other universities. Investigation launched Talaat Ebrahim, Egypt's Prosecutor-General has launched an investigation into the incident and ordered to refer all cooking tools used in preparing the food and samples of the food as well as the vomit to a criminal laboratory. Academic shortage deepens as student numbers soar

The number of professors working in Kenya’s seven older public universities has risen by a measly 11% over the past three years while student numbers have soared by 56%, highlighting the challenge the country faces in matching enrolments with lecturers. Statistics released by the Commission for University Education, or CUE, show that the number of professors rose from 238 in 2010 to 265 by February this year. This pushed academic staff numbers in the seven universities to 5,189 from around 4,800 three years ago – 8% growth. During the same period, student numbers shot from 140,000 in 2010 to 218,832 this year, which means that lecturers are being forced to take on a bigger workload, possibly compromising already shaky quality of learning. While five of the seven universities have grown their number of professors, two have seen the number drop slightly. The University of Nairobi has the highest number of professors at 124, up from 110, followed by Moi University, which now has 42, down from 49. Kenyatta had 29 full professors but now has 27, while Maseno has seen its number of professors rise from 17 to 22. Jomo Kenyatta, Egerton and Masinde Muliro universities each had 11 professors three years ago and now have 22, 12 and 15 respectively. The lecturer to student ratio varies between universities. The University of Nairobi, with 57,162 students, has an academic staff of 1,610 – meaning the lecturer to student ratio is 1:36. Kenyatta University, the country’s biggest with 61,928 students, has 961 academics and so there are on average 65 students per lecturer. Moi has a ratio of 1:47, with its 34,477 students and 736 teaching staff, and at the other institutions the ratio ranges from 1:31 to 1:39. Although the number of qualified lecturers has been rising, it lags far behind student growth, forcing many universities to hire underqualified staff for academic positions. CUE’s predecessor, the Commission for Higher Education or CHE, downplayed the impact of low staffing levels. The new body has been given wider regulatory scope in far-reaching reforms to the higher education sector that kicked off in January. Educationists said the staffing crisis in public universities was expected to worsen this year, with yet more students enrolling and the number of universities rising. Kenya has embarked on a plan to increase the number of public universities from the current seven to 22. Over the past two months, outgoing President Mwai Kibaki has awarded university charters to 15 technical colleges, allowing them to offer degrees on their own. Previously the colleges were aligned to public universities. Due to space constraints, more than half of 118,256 eligible students – 76,000 – missed out on a place at a public university last year. Public universities are under pressure to provide admission to 40,000 students over and above the usual intake to eradicate an admissions backlog, under a double-intake plan that started last year. Demand for higher education far exceeds the supply of places, prompting increasing numbers of students to study abroad, especially in Uganda, the US, Malaysia and the UK. Educationists maintain that unmet demand has also opened space for rogue institutions offering sub-standard qualifications to thrive, undermining the reputation of higher education. It will be interesting to see if universities will raise staffing levels with an anticipated boost in government funding. Kenya has increased funding for higher education by 30% for the financial year beginning in July. The Ministry of Finance said in its spending plan that funding for the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology would be increased from KSh61 billion (US$717 million) during the current year to KSh80 billion (US$941 million) in the coming year. Universities will see funding reach KSh60 billion.

Abuja University: FG’s N35b That Went Down The Drain

It is absolutely unspeakable that the University of Abuja, situated in nation's capital is in dilapidated condition. In fact, the university is one of the worst in the nation as per infrastructure, poor management and instability. The university has been rocked with several crises over the past years, the issues appear more intensified as those in charge of the administration seem to complicate matters. Right now, the avalanche of files, recommendation and facts/figures that indict the management that are before the authorities, even the presidency that have been left unattended to raise more worries on whether the government is ready to solve the problems of the school. There was unrest recently within the campus which led to total shut down of academic activities for about four months, after a prolonged reaction by students over publication of the Council for Regulation of Engineering (COREN), disqualifying the university whose Faculty of Engineering was not accredited. Subsequently, in April, 2012, the Minister for Education, Prof, Rukayyat Rufai officially pronounce the suspension of four new academic programmes; Engineering, Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine and Human Medicine. The action prompted the students to take to the streets of Abuja, expressing anger. This dismay generated series of confusion over University of Abuja, to the extent that people began to seek clarification over the competence of the Vice Chancellor of the institution to manage the affairs of the institution, arguably, the university community accused the VC to have been hinted prior to the demonstration but nothing substantial was arrived at to curb or ameliorate the incidence which later escalated into riots and violent demonstration by the students. Obviously, for those that are familiar with the university environment, this account is just a piece of a bunch. Compounded case Since the assumption of office by Prof. James Adelabu in 2009, the calamities of the university seem to have worsened. Top persons of the institution have doubts if decent administration can be unachievable in the present administration of the school. A document in Abuja Metro possession gave analyses of the Vice Chancellor's tenure, qualifying it as below the mark. He narrated that, for almost three years, the university has been embedded in series of chaos and mismanagement orchestrated by some principal officers and the VC's office, yet the federal government and the Ministry of Education under the leadership of Prof. Rufai don't seem to be doing anything serious to fix the problem of the university. Irrespective of several measures and recommendations presented by numerous panels instituted by government, no concrete action has been taken to implement any of them to solve the riddle. The source lamented that more than three panels and committees have been constituted within the Institution mainly to examine the remote causes of unrest which have persistently cast a gloom over the management of the university, some of the committees, he identifies, includes; The committee instituted to investigate issues raised in the submission made to the Governing Council by the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) University of Abuja Chapter, in April, 2012, headed by Prof. E.P Ejembi, where some alarming issues were generated, amongst which was identified from the report made available to Abuja Metro, read; "The purchase of 8,000 plastic chairs and 4,250 plastic tables by the administration for examination in four different occasions; June 22, August 11, August 23 and September 6, 2011, "items which amounted to N37,600,600 was awarded to Needs Technologies Limited by the Vice Chancellor", stating ,that he clearly exceeded his "approval limit" during the course. The source stated, that as represented in the report that indicted the VC, Internal Auditor and Bursar to have violated the "Public Procurement Act 2007" by single handedly authorizing such payment. Meanwhile, he stated that as recommendation from the report, it was clearly stipulated that appropriate sanctions for "Public Procurement Act" be awarded by the Council. He also cited the investigation committee headed by Prof. E.J.C Nwana, that was instituted in November 2012 to: To identify the immediate and remote cause that led to the disruption of the second semester examinations 2011/2012 academic session which were to commence on 19th November 19, 2012; To identify (if possible) those involved; Report any findings or observation on the matter which may be useful to management and the university; and Make appropriate recommendation to senate. Investigations without result Subsequently, series of investigation were carried out to unravel factors, which contributed to the ugly incidence during the period. They hinted that on several occasions, the administration has paid deaf hear to substantial advice from intelligence units and other authorities within the Institution which lead to the outbreak. As part of recommendation in the same report, it was stated that: "the University leadership should run an all-inclusive administration. The VC and management should be open and listen closely to good initiatives that will enhance the growth of the university" Also, "the university culture of having calendar of events with time lines assigned to them well in advance be adhered to." Drainpipe Recently, a Special Presidential Visitation Panel with 40 members chaired by Dr. T. C. Osanakpo, was also constituted to review the generality of ills within the university lingering to no end. According to the review, the report stated that the total money available to the university from 1988 to 2012 amounted to N34,953,209,000 out of this, of N22,937,629,000,00 (65.62%) was from government subvention, capital grants while the balance of N12,015,580,000,00 (34.38%) was from internally generated revenue from other income sources and student fees charged during the period under visitation, while the distribution of the total university income under the tenure of past VCs are as follows: The panel from the financial audit found that there are cases of unsigned financial statements for eight years by both Council and management; differences in figures of university records and audited accounts, consistent understanding of the depreciation charges on the fixed assets; incorrect balancing of the individual creditor accounts; misclassifications of expenditure items; wrong creditor balances resulting in duplication of the recording of liabilities that could lead to loss of university's funds and elongated tenure of External Auditors Messrs; PKF & Co, for over eight years. Accounting mix-up The investigation of the university's finances also revealed cases of huge unretired advances amounting to N240m mostly due to use of direct labour in the execution of projects; excessive increases in university's expenditure profile due to poor planning and lack of financial prudence; irregular refunds of medical bills for the Pro-Chancellor amounting to over N29m between 2009 and 2012; violation of approval limits and contract splitting by the current VC in the purchase of plastic chairs and tables to the tune of N37.6m; wasteful expenditure on public relations and image laundering to the tune of N5.6m in April 2012, N25.5m in May, 2012 and N14.6m in the month of June 2012, paid to some public relations outfits and prints/electronic media for University image laundering and public relations. In the report, the panel stated that, there were also cases of indiscretion on expenditure on security resulting in the misuse of funds as "security honorarium" ostensibly to maintain security on campus. This called 'blatant abuse' started in 2007/2008 during the tenure of Prof. Nuhu Yaqub and continued unchecked under the current Vice Chancellor. Bad tradition This resulted in the misappropriation of N110.647.045 by the two Vice Chancellors coupled with constant withdrawal of huge amounts in favour of the Pro-Chancellor and Vice Chancellor through vulnerable staff without proper documentation and inconsistencies in payment vouchers in relation to supporting documents as provided in the main report. In furtherance, the panel recommended series of measures for improvement of the administration part of which includes; "that the current Firm of PKF & Co which has undertaken the University's Audit for the past eight years (2004 to 2012) be replaced immediately by the Council; the Auditor General for the Federation should in the interim be directed to appoint the external auditors for the University and superintend their work plan and the segmented execution of the audit to completion. "There should also be a customized accounting manual as well as an internal audit manual designed by professional using NUC guidelines in order to strengthen the financial operations of the university internally and correct the anomalies of the present system whereby the operations are centred around an individual in the person. "The Pro-Chancellor should refund N3.645.578.62 expended on his wife's medical expenses. "The University should as a matter of urgency remit all taxes deducted from contractors as well as PAYE of about N114m to the tax authorities. "That, the current Vice-Chancellor be reprimanded for making unilateral and irrational decision to purchase plastic chairs and tables with N37m, further, for contract splitting, failure to obtain the approval of the Council and exceeding his approval limits in award of this contracts. "Also, that both the VC and the Bursar be reprimanded for failing to deduct the statutory taxes from the companies that executed projects for the University. "The total amount of N25.501.415.08 needlessly and unilaterally spent on image making and public relation be recovered. "The amount of N110.647.045.00 misappropriated in the name of security honorarium should be recovered from the two Vice Chancellors (Prof Nuhu O. Yaqub and Prof. JSA Adelabu) the full extent of the abuse should be ascertained. "That rates applied for payment of sitting allowances and other entitlements to external members of the University Council should conform with the provision of the exact government circulars." No action These and many more were captured in the panel's review and officially presented to the Presidency for implementation early this year. But contrary to expectation, all the findings and recommendations from each of the independent panels and committees were verified and up to press time, the reports have not been attended to as those indicted in the entire reports have not been questioned or any action taken to ensure the wrongs are corrected to make the institution work better or recover from its ailment. Today, the entire University community, especially the Academic Staff is frustrated over the insensitivity of the presidency and failure to preside over the reports lying under the desk unmanaged. And many are tempted to ask if the institution would survive these and remain in existence.

‘Over 4,000 Employees Set To Lose Jobs In NECO’

Over 4,000 people will be rendered jobless if the National Examination Council (NECO) is scrapped as recommended by the Oronsaye panel, the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) has warned. The Chairman of NASU, NECO chapter, Comrade Abdulrasheed Rabana, gave the warning yesterday while reacting to media report that government was contemplating scrapping the only indigenous examination body, saying most of these staff are skilled and technical senior officers. He said any attempt to scrap NECO and make WAEC to take over all its structures could be viewed as subjugation of Nigerian sovereignty and national pride to the regional examination body, adding that should anything happen to WAEC tomorrow, what will be the fate of Nigerian students. Rabana said many countries that are only having one examination body were aspiring to have more to cater for explosion in schools enrolment, adding that ironically in Nigeria government was contemplating to scrap the only examination body in the country that took several years to build. "Having more than one examination body is seen globally as a mark of national achievement rather than a burden. This the more reason why countries that still manage with one institution aspire to have more in tandem with the global explosion in school enrolments and by implication examination candidates," he said. He further argued that unknown to the Oronsaye committee, any attempt to interrupt the progress made in NECO by scrapping the examination council would be viewed as a setback in national drive toward self reliance in education. Similarly, the Governing Board and Management of NECO had reassured candidates and schools that had registered for the various examinations that the time table for such examinations remained unchanged, saying National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE), Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) will hold as scheduled on April 13, 2013, May 9th -23rd, 2013 and 1st June - 12th July, 2013 respectively.

Tai Solarin College of Education Expels 26 Alleged Cultists

The authorities of the Tai Solarin College of Education, Omu-Ijebu in Ogun State on Tuesday announced the expulsion of 26 students of the college for alleged involvement in cultism. Violence attributed to cultists in the school forced the on-going examination to be disrupted on Monday. Announcing the expulsion, the College Registrar, Tunji Kanimodo, told journalists shortly after getting the nod from the State Government in Abeokuta, that the latest development will not affect the examinations as it is expected to continue on Wednesday. The registrar said trouble started last week, when the suspected cultists stormed the college to disrupt the examination claiming that they had not paid their school fees. "But, all efforts to calm them down led to break down of law and order on Monday, as they (the cultists) regrouped with other members outside the College to unleash violence," Mr. Kanimodo stated. He said the ensuing violence led to an assault on the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and five staff of the College, while the DPO's car was damaged. "Immediately, the management headed for Abeokuta, where the decision to expel the identified 26 students was taken," Mr. Kanimodo explained. He assured that examinations will continue "as appropriate security provisions, with the DC (Operations) in charge, was fully in place to prevent further damage to properties." When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident, adding that some arrests had been made over the assault on the DPO and the College staff.

Nigerian Degrees are not Worthless – University Commission Boss

The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, NUC, Julius Okojie, on Thursday advised Nigerians not to cheapen the country's educational system by saying that "its degrees are worthless." Mr. Okojie said at the presentation of a report on Labour Market Observation on Nigerian Graduates in Abuja that Nigerian graduates were not underprivileged and unintelligent but good with great skills. He said people tend to describe Nigerian degrees as worthless because the demand for them was less than the supply of graduates into the labour market every year. He explained that the notion came about because of the unemployment rate in the country, adding that it should not be the yardstick for measuring the quality of the graduates. "The problem is that there is no balance on the sides of demand and supply. It's just that the supply is so much and the demand for the graduates is less," he said. Mr. Okojie said the Nigerian education system was good "as it produces intelligent graduates." "The onus is in understanding the peculiarity of the economy and moving in that direction to produce the right graduates." Mr. Okojie explained that NUC initiated the survey to understand the needs of the labour market and prepare the students to meet those requirements through proper training. "I keep hearing that our certificates are not acceptable abroad. Who has given that impression in this country? I have been in the university system since 1978 and I can tell you that our certificates are honoured abroad. The Federal Government gives scholarship to the best 52 youth corps members to study abroad every year. Some of them have third class honours; some are even HND holders and they do so well that they are asked to stay for their PhDs. So, where did we get the idea that our degrees are worthless? All the graduates need is the opportunity to practice. So, we must not kill our education system by saying our degrees are worthless," he stressed. Mr. Okojie said the obligation was to learn what was in vogue. "For example, ICT has come to Nigeria and there is need to build capacity in that aspect. We must look at the labour market and its requirement and we must also bend our training needs in that direction. With that, I am convinced that we are in the right direction and confident that we will get it right," he said. Earlier, Ignatius Uvah, the consultant for the survey, said it was initiated to create awareness on the labour market among stakeholders and would guide the training of graduates for effective performance. "It will also help in putting in place national and institutional structure for polices on the labour market information system. This will help the suppliers and consumers of labour to understand the peculiarities of the market and align themselves to it," he said.

University Of Nigeria Records Increase In Female Science Students

The University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN, has recorded more than 50 per cent increase in the number of female students studying sciences since 2009, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bartho Okolo, said this in Paris. Mr. Okolo made the statement in Paris when two Nigerian female scientists received the 2013 UNESCO-L'Oreal awards. "Science is the centre of development in the world. As a university, we have taken it as a key priority to train 60 per cent in science courses while 40 per cent in other fields," he said. "In the past five years, the level of literacy in science has gone up very high, more girls are now interested in various science related courses. On a scale of 100, I will say more than 50 per cent of girls have been admitted to study sciences since 2009," he added. He said that the university would continue to create the enabling environment to encourage students in sciences. The vice-chancellor said the award to the women "will motivate others in the field of science". The UNESCO-L'Oreal awardees were recognised each in the "Laureates and fellows" honours categories. Professor Francisca Okeke, the first female Head of Department at the UNN bagged the 2013 Laureate award for her significant contributions to the scientific study on climate change. She was the only recipient in that category from Africa and the Arab nations, and the third Nigerian laureate since the UNESCO-L'Oreal partnership was established in 1998. Four others also got awards in the Laureate category with each representing Europe, Latin America, North America, and the Asia Pacific regions. Dr Eucharis Nacho, an environmental biochemist from the University of Port Harcourt joined 15 other young scientists in the "International Fellows" honours category.

FLASH BACK: Ambrose Alli University Sex-For-Grades Scandal: Dr. Otubu Fired; Judith Okosun Suspended For Six Semesters

In the report, Engr. Peter Otubu, the lecturer whose demand of sexual favours in exchange for good grades led to the crisis, was fired by the University, this was confirmed by the university authorities. In July 2010, Sahara reporters broke the story of the scandal. Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who was a Visitor at the institution, immediately demanded an investigation and report. The university, which Ms. Okosun’s lawyer claimed to have been informed of the incident from the beginning, although its spokesman denied it, set up two committees. The student was found guilty of“breaching her matriculation oath”. This means that Ms. Okosun a victim of Dr. Otubu’s wayward ways will not be able to complete her studies at the university several years later than before Mr. Otubu’s intervention. Also, the university offers no guarantee that another randy lecturer will not be waiting with a new grading“system”, or to exact vengeance. Dr. Otubu’s case was instructive according to the university vice chancellor who rendered an account of his past to the NEWS magazine, as stated here:“Professor Sam Uniamikogbo, the university’s Vice-Chancellor (at that time), explained why Judith was also sanctioned.“The student was aware of the university’s rules and regulations and once any student violate any of the rules, that student will be disciplined,’’he reporters. The rules, said the then Vice-Chancellor, forbid students from taking laws into their own hands, as Judith seemed to have done. Uniamikogbo is, however, still shocked by the conduct of Otubu. Prior to the scandal, the V-C said, Otubu was considered chaste; having helped the university authorities bust a lecturer who habitually demanded sex from married undergraduates.‘‘It was Otubu that we put on the case. The married woman was told to play along. Otubu helped us to arrest the lecturer at the hotel to which he had invited the woman. I could never have imagined that a man we thought was clean and a veritable role model would be involved in this kind of scandal,”Uniamikogbo said ruefully. The university terminated Dr. Otubu’s appointment on October 26 2010. A source at the university told SaharaReporters that Judith went to court to challenge her wrongful rustication from the university. She was suspended for six semesters

Kidnapped lecturer regains freedom, another slumps, dies in office

Prof. Celestina Isiramen, a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Edo, who was abducted by unknown gunmen last week Wednesday has regained her freedom. Her release came as the university community of Ekpoma was thrown into mourning, following the death of Prof. Solomon Momoh of the Institute of Education. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Isiramen was released to her family on Thursday morning amidst jubilation by family members. Isiramen, of the Religious Management and Cultural Studies Department, was abducted by unknown gun men while driving into her residence. The kidnappers forcibly made her to leave her vehicle and entered theirs, whisking her away to an unknown destination. NAN reports that the amount said to havebeen paid to secure her release could not be ascertained. Meanwhile, the university community was on Thursday morning engulfed in mourning after Momoh slumped and diedin his office. It was gathered that the deceased professor had just returned from lecture hall when he collapsed as he was entering his office. All efforts to revive him failed as he gaveup the ghost before any medical attentioncould be arranged. A spokesman for the university confirmed the two incidents.

NIGERIA: Jonathan Tasks Universities on Insecurity

President Goodluck Jonathan has urged universities to bring their potentials to bear on solving contemporary problems facing the country such as the recurring insecurity in some parts. He threw the challenge in a message to the 26thConvocation Ceremony of the University of Jos which also witnessed the conferment of honorary degrees on Chief Afe Babalola, SAN, Alhaji Ahmed Joda and Da Bitrus Pam Kim. Represented by the Minister of Education, Professor Ruqquayat Ahmed Rufai, the presidentsaid: "our universities must align with our national goals and aspirations and brace up to the challenges of knowledge based competition. You must strive to be creative in your approach to contemporary problem solving, including the recurring insecurity problems in some parts of the country." He said this had become imperative considering that "for most other nations, higher education is today defining the pace of economic advancement, scientific progress, social development and national integration." President Jonathan said the administration has demonstrated commitment to improving the education sector through "significant vote" in this year's budget. "We believe that education isthe first step towards securing the nation's future; therefore, the Federal Government will continue to build on this in the coming years towards producing the desired results for the benefit of our people", he said. Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Hayward Mafuyai highlighted the achievements of the institution in the area of research to include the development of Grewa Gum for the formulation of tablets and the demonstrating the value of mushroom for the management of sleeping sickness disease, both by the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, among others. He reiterated the appeal for the release of the take off grant of the university to enable her move her four foundation faculties to the permanent site as well as for a special grant to pay compensation on the Phase II land to check further encroachment. The Chancellor, the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adeyemo Adejugbe, Aladesanmi III urged the Federal Government to increase the grant to the university in view of the enormous security challenges it is facing. He said although relative peace had returned to the state, staff and students still operate amidst uncertainty and fear. Over 8,000 graduates received various degrees and certificates on the occasion.

Ekiti State University Expels 50, Graduates 4,439

Vice-Chancellor of Ekiti State University, EKSU, Professor Oladipo Aina, has vowed that any staffof the university involved in the fake production of examination permit would be dealt with, saying 50 students indicted by the institution's disciplinary committee for exam malpractice have been expelled. This came as 11 students of the institution will receive first class honours degrees out of the 4,439 that will graduate on Saturday. He said 701 got Second Class Upper; 2,695, Second Class Lower; 970, Third Class and 62, ordinary pass. He said: "748 graduating postgraduate students comprise 27 Ph. Ds, 302 Masters and 419 postgraduate diplomas."

NUC To Shut Varsities Without Governing Councils

National Universities Commission on Tuesday advised state universities to constitute their governing councils or risk the hammer of the commission. The NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Julius Okojie, stated this in Abuja at the inauguration of the governing councils for 21 federal universities. Describing the situation as unhealthy for the university education, Okojie stressed that no university could operate properly without a governing council performing its oversight functions. He bemoaned a situation where governors acting as council members "sit in government houses and award contracts as well as appoint vice-chancellors". The NUC Executive Secretary, who called on the council members to deploy their wealth of experience in changing the fortune of the universities, urged them to address the challenges facing the university system. He said, "I must tell you that there are challenges within the university system; the issue of relationship between the immediate community and external community, the issue of examination malpractice, selection of students and in some cases the issue of land acquisition. So, there are many issues bordering the system." Okojie said he had received instruction from President Goodluck Jonathan to fire vice-chancellors who run programmes not accredited by the commission. He added, "This time, the President has given usa marching order that any Vice-Chancellor who runs any programme that is not accredited will go. If the Governing Council makes it difficult forus to fire such a VC, we will dismiss the Council and fire the VC. "The issue of integrity and responsibility is also very important. Yes, there are a lot of us going into the university system. Accountability is an issue. "Soon and very soon any university that has no governing council would be closed because thereis no way a university can survive without a governing council. We don't want a situation where the governor of a state will sit in government house and all the contracts go from there and promotions go from there" Inaugurating members of the councils, EducationMinister, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa'I, urged them to use their good offices to attract more funds to the schools.

Expelled Final Year Student Sues Redeemers University

A four hundred level student of Political Science of Redeemers University of all Nations, John GiftMomoh expelled by the school over allegations of taking hard drugs has dragged the institution before an Ogun State High Court in Ota, southwest Nigeria. In an affidavit sworn to by Momoh and filed before the court by a Lagos lawyer, Barrister Adejumo Omobolaji, the deponent alleged that he was summarily expelled from the university without justification. Momoh averred further that in a letter of expulsion dated 29 January, 2013 addressed to him and given to his father, the reason for his expulsion was addiction to morphine and cannabis but he averred that he has never taken psychotropic substance in his life and as such hecould not be a drug addict. The applicant stated further that the school conducted urine test on him and other students sometime in November 2012. He said. The result of the tests were not shown to them and the school's health centre is not an accredited forensic laboratory, in addition the health centre is not manned by qualified narcotics investigators. Consequently it was the security men and some staff of the health centre that conducted the test. In view of this development, the applicant contended that the quality assurance of the processes, tools and techniques used in reachingthe conclusion cannot be reliable. It was further contended that the specimens were not properly collected neither and not properly labelled. The disciplinary panel that heard the case were alleged to have sat in secrecy, the membership and details of deliberations were not made known while the students including the applicantwere not asked to make any representation to the disciplinary panel, neither were they allowedto confront the boy that was said to give evidence which implicated the applicant. Therefore, the applicant averred that the trial negates the rules of fair hearing enshrined in the1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In view of this, Momoh, while asking for the sumof N10 million as compensation and aggravated damages against the institution, is also urging the court to declare the expulsion letter sent to him as inoperative, void and of no effect. Joined as co-respondents in this fundamental right enforcement suit are: the vice chancellor ofthe school, the Registrar and the Dean Students Affairs.

KWAME NKRUMAH UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION'S 7TH BIENNIAL CONGRESS

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Alumni Association (Teknokrats) has held its 7th Biennial Congress at the New Capital View Hotel at Koforidua in the Eastern Region. The event brought together alumni both at home and abroad, as well as some members of the University Council and Management.   The Congress was on the theme “Reducing Graduate Unemployment: the Role of Teknokrats.” The event was held under the distinguished chairmanship of His Royal Highness, Daasebre Prof. Emeritus Oti Boateng. Happy birthday to a true Teknokrat   Daasebre Prof. Oti Boateng, in his welcome address, stated that the theme for the Congress was appropriate and timely. This was because gone are the days when students had secure jobs even before graduating from school.   He said there were currently no jobs and the situation had been worsened with the proliferation of private tertiary institutions in the country.   Daasebre Prof. Oti Boateng noted that unemployment had been the bane of society for many decades. He continued that academic institutions could not stop producing graduates due to this problem. In the same way society also could not afford to continue to turn out graduates without giving them jobs. Society needs the expertise of its human resource to propel its growth. To minimise or reduce the problem of unemployment therefore called for the concerted efforts of all Teknocrats and society.   Honourable Teknokrat Ebenezer Oklatey Tei-Larbi, Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, called on graduates to embrace new technologies and entrepreneurship to reduce unemployment. He also advocated for the partnership of industry and academia to help nurture young entrepreneurs.   Teknokrat Dr. Kofi Amoah, Chief Executive Officer of Citizen Kofi, said that graduates should be produced with the right perspective to contribute to national development. He called on Ghanaians to use local resources to create employment and wealth for themselves.   Dr. Kofi Amoah said there would be no employment if we did not manufacture the things we needed adding that we could not be employed when we were exporting our jobs by using foreign products. He also called for the creation of modern shops to replace the existing traditional markets and the setting up of distribution, marketing, exporting and promotion institutions for local products.   Teknokrat Dr. Michael Agyekum Addo, Chief Executive Officer of KAMA, in his presentation called for a change in the mindset of people as a key to combating graduate unemployment. He said Ghana’s first president Osagyefo   Dr. Kwame Nkrumah saw that industrialisation was the key to development and that explained why he set up many industries. Successive governments, however, failed to follow this example which also accounted for the high rate of unemployment in Ghana.   Dr. Agyekum revealed that with the ever-increasing number of unemployed graduates worldwide, the “entrepreneurial revolution” will soon catch up with us. Under this revolution the only option would be self-employment. Dr Agyekum said the time was coming when there would be no jobs for people and entrepreneurship will be the norm. He therefore called on graduates to identify opportunities around them and to make use of such opportunities, develop them and to utilise them to their benefit.   Professor William Otoo Ellis, Vice-Chancellor addressed Teknokrats on the state of the University. Teknokrat Tony Danklu, President of the Alumni Association also briefed Teknokrats on the current state of the Alumni Association. There were also chapter reports by the Chapter Coordinators and Representatives.   Teknokrat Eunice Akosua Ofosua Amoako, National General Secretary also gave the roll call and Annual Report, while Teknokrat Fanny Enos presented the Annual Financial Report. OTHER ACTIVITIES 1.    The Congress was preceded by career seminars at Koforidua Secondary Technical School, Ghana Senior High School and Pope John Senior High School for Final year students. 2.    Delegates were also welcomed with an Akwaaba Cocktail and Get Together. 3.    The Vice-Chancelor, Prof. Otoo Ellis, as part of his Community Impact Programme, and in partnership with some donors, made presenatation of computers, books and several items to some needy schools in the Koforidua Township.   Other activities which took place after the main congress were a trip to the Boti Falls, Picnic and Dinner Dance, as well as a Thanksgiving Service at the International Central Gospel Church. MAJOR DECISIONS: It was unanimously agreed that the present National Executives would continue to serve for a one-year term after which elections would be conducted to elect new officers. Congress also proposed a review of the Constitution of the Association after 12years since it was adopted.
